He was a solider in La Fouille's Company. This regiment was thrust into military action to aid Algonquin and Huron Indian commercial partners in their perpetual war with the Iroquois. The Iroquois saw the French presence as a threat to their homeland. In this hatred, the Iroquois were aided and abetted by their English allies, who had reasons of their own for wanting the French out of North America. As the fury of the Iroquois attacks mounted, the struggling French colonists were forced to become soldiers. He came to the New World via Le Saint-Sébastien. The 300-ton vessel equipped with 30 cannons and about 200 soldiers departed La Rochelle on 24 May 1665 and arrived at Québec on 12 September 1665.
