Jean CHÉNIER II was born between 1614 and 1626 in Celles (Charente-Maritime) (Poitou Charentes Region), France.1770,1958 Jean was a master carpenter. Jean's first wife, Jacqueline Sédillot, had died prior to August 1667 and Jean was left with six young children. In 1667, he married Marie Grusseau. She was a King's Daughter who had arrived in Québec from France a little more than a month before the couple signed their marriage contract on 23 August 1657. he appeared in the census in 1667 in Sainte-Genevieve (Québec Province), Canada at the "Costes de Ste.Genevieve, St.Francois and St. Michel" with his new wife (whose name appears as Marie Serre) and six of Jean's children from his first marriage to Sédillot. The family had nine beasts and 10 arpents in cultivation. In July 1671, Jean Chénier filed a complaint with the Prévóté de Québec, claiming that he found his second wife, Marie Grusseau, in bed with Rémy Dupil and when he surprised the two, Marie told her lover, "If you go after my husband, hit him so hard that he can't get back up." Dupil did as Marie suggested and beat Jean rather severely. However, in proceedings dated 07 August of the same year, the Prévóté noted "Jean Chesnier and Marie Gresleau have agreed to get back together and have affection and respect for each other." He appeared in the census in 1681. The couple was living in the 'Seigneurie de Dombourg', Neuville with three children. Jean's occupation was listed as a carpenter. The family had three beasts and 10 arpents of land.
