Émelie (Emily) MOREAU was born on 10 March 1816 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA.875 She was baptized on 4 July 1818 in Bayou Rouge (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA.875 In the 1850 Avoyelles census, the "Widow James Nelson" (age 35) was living with her 17-year-old son, William, 12-year-old daughter, Lisa, and son, Joseph Saucier. Interestingly, Joseph Saucier was listed as 5 years of age although Joseph was born in March 1849 and would have, therefore, been about 17 months of age. At the same time, Celimine Saucier, age 11, was living with the family. She is believed to have been the daughter of Nicolas Saucier and Julie Guillory. Nicolas was living down the road at the home of Joseph Coco and Pauline Mayeux along with his 17-year-old son, Henry Saucier. It is likely that Nicolas' wife, Julie Guillory, had died by this time and her family was not living in the same household (possibly as early as 1842). However, speculation is that the Emelie's youngest child, Joseph Saucier, was actually the child of Nicolas Saucier, the widower of Julie Guillory, even though Joseph's baptismal record states that his father was a 'Joseph Saucier' (unidentified). (A civil marriage was recorded between Émelie and François Gaspard on 14 October 1856 in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. The couple appeared together in the 1870 census; François was 85 years of age & Emelie was 56.)
