Jean Pierre NORMAND II was born on 18 December 1774 in (St. John the Baptist Parish), Louisiana, USA.1240,2774 He was baptized on 22 December 1774 in Edgard (St. John the Baptist Parish), Louisiana, USA. Edgard, Louisiana was the site of the Second German Coast.1241,2774 In about 1788, Jean Pierre Normand moved with his parents and siblings to Avoyelles Parish. Jean Pierre's father established the Port of Jean Normand on the Red River and this port provided income for the family for many years. Jean Pierre worked with his father managing the port and it it likely that he was the one who inherited the business in later years as his father became ill. (This property was sold in 1822.) He appeared in the census in 1810 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA with his second wife, Marguerite Marcotte. The couple had married in about 1804. However, little is known about Jean Pierre Normand between the time of his first married to Irene Marie Joffrion and the 1810 Census because, according to "The Normand Family ... Volume II", his name was, essentially, absent from records in Avoyelles. It was not until 1812 that he purchased his first slave and he did not purchase property until 1816. It does appear, however, that he served in the War of 1812 as a Private in the 8th Regiment of the Louisiana Militia although little is known about the specifics of his service.1242 In 1816, Jean Pierre and Marguerite Marcotte purchased a 340-arpent plantation from Joseph Joffrion. It was located in the Southwestern Land District, T2N/R4E, Section 59). The 340-arpent concession had been part of an original Spanish land grant to William InRufty in 1797. Jean Pierre would live on this property for the rest of his life. Some time after the sale of the Red River property (and the Port of Jean Normand) in 1822, it appears that Jean Pierre became involved in a number of civil disputes with his wife, children and neighbors. This would culminate in a legal separation from his second wife, Marguerite Marcotte, on 9 April 1842 but disputes continued until his 1844 death. 1243 On 16 April 1842, a sale of slaves, property, animals, and other items owned by the couple took place in Avoyelles. Jean died about 25 March 1844 at the age of 69 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA.1244 After the death of Jean Pierre, his succession was tumultuous as Marguerite Marcotte, representing her children's interests, challenged acts of sale that had taken place from Jean Pierre to two of his sons. The fight continued for many years leaving the family torn and bruised.1244 Marguerite MARCOTTE and Jean Pierre NORMAND II251 were married about 1804 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA. It is unknown whether or not Jean Pierre's seemingly disagreeable nature contributed to the breakup of his marriage to Marguerite Marcotte but they were separated (divorced) on 9 April 1842 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA. On that date, a Judge presided over the couple's separation agreement.1245 [Note: Jean Pierre's 1st marriage was to Irene Marie Joffrion.] 191. She appeared in the census in 1850 in (Avoyelles Parish), Louisiana, USA. Their family home was located in Marksville on North Main Street just south of the present-day Acton Road intersection. This was the site of the terminus of the mule powered tramway which brought freight from Red River steamboats after the Civil War.
